OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA (OSA): THE GIANT SLEEPING DISORDER

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a breathing disorder that happens during sleep and affects up to 52 million Americans in total.

Men are more likely to have sleep apnea than women, and the risk of OSA goes up with age.

THE ISSUE WITH OSA

People who have obstructive sleep apnea have trouble getting enough air while they sleep. This causes symptoms like loud snoring, gasping for air, and long pauses between breaths.

Many people with OSA feel tired, have trouble concentrating, or are irritable. And because sleep apnea can keep your body from getting enough oxygen, it may make you more likely to have high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats, and a stroke.

HOW SLEEP APNEA WORKS

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a condition that occurs when the tissues in the back of the throat collapse and block the airway.

This can cause snoring, gasping, or choking sounds, and can sometimes lead to pauses in breathing during sleep.

The tongue is one of the major muscles that can contribute to OSA. During sleep, the tongue relaxes and falls backwards, blocking the airway.

In some people, the tongue is larger than average or the muscles are particularly relaxed, making them more likely to experience OSA.

HOW TO TREAT SLEEP APNEA

People with sleep apnea don't always get treatment because they don't know that symptoms like snoring are signs of a much bigger problem, so they don't go to the doctor.

At
our dental office in Edinburg, TX, we’ve been checking patients in North Edinburg neighborhoods such as Bar Number 5 Colonia, Ranchette Estates Colonia, and 281 Estates Colonia for sleep apnea for years now.

The process starts with a meeting to talk about your condition and then you do a sleep study test at home.

During the test, your breathing and heart rate are tracked by a device, and the results are sent to be viewed by a doctor who does sleep studies.

When the problem is very bad, a CPAP (continuous positive air pressure) mask will be suggested.

But many people with OSA can get better with a simple dental device that moves their jaw forward while they sleep. With your tongue in this position, it can't fall back against your throat and block your airway.
