How To Fix Misaligned Teeth

Malocclusion, which is another word for misaligned teeth, is a common problem that can be caused by simple crowding of teeth (when our jaws can't fit all of your teeth) or habits such as sucking your thumb as a child.

Tooth alignment and bite problems are often caused by things that are passed down from generation to generation or are present at birth.

There are also attributable roles played by facial growth and genetics, as well as gum disease, tooth loss, and wear and tear in adults.

A bad bite can cause both functional and aesthetic problems, like making it hard to chew and sometimes making it hard to talk. It can also affect your smile and confidence.

As one of the most common dental problems, it is usually fixed in children and teens with different kinds of treatments.

CAN SERIOUSLY CROOKED TEETH BE FIXED?

Yes, but each case of misaligned teeth is different because of the shape of the mouth, where the teeth are, and the other factors previously discussed.

All of these problems can be fixed with the following treatments:

ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT

When teeth aren't lined up right, the best treatment is orthodontics, providing different kinds of alignment treatments.

These treatments will move the teeth into the right place, using either traditional fixed braces, internal lingual (hidden) braces, clear aligners like Invisalign, or a combination of these, depending on the case and how badly the teeth are out of place.

At Lakes Family Dental, we offer a
Free Invisalign Consultation Session to look at your teeth and review what treatment will work best for you.

ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY

When there are major problems with how the jaw grows and develops, it is sometimes necessary to think about corrective jaw surgery along with orthodontic treatment.

This doesn't happen very often, though, and new ways to treat orthodontic problems have shown that many of these problems can now be fixed without having to operate on the jaw.

RESTORATIVE TREATMENTS

After braces have been used to straighten the teeth, some restorative work may be needed if the teeth are small or misshapen, or if the teeth of an adult have been hurt by decay, worn down, or damaged.

Once the teeth are straightened, there may be cosmetic problems that weren't there before.

For example, the edges of the teeth may not be the same length, or the misaligned teeth may be a different color.

Most of the time, this is done with simple restorative treatments like composite bonding, fillings, and whitening.

However, if the damage to the teeth is more severe,
restorations like veneers or crowns may be needed.

Once the braces have fixed the misalignment and the problems are more clear, your dentist will figure out what the best solution is for your teeth.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO FIX MISALIGNED TEETH?

How long it takes will depend on the treatment and the person receiving it.

Treatments for misaligned teeth can take anywhere from six months to three years, depending on the person and how bad the problem is.

After your treatment is over, you may also need to wear a retainer to keep your teeth in their new positions.

You may also have a retainer attached to the back of your teeth to make sure they don't move back to how they were before.
